Authorities identified Saturday a man who was detained after allegedly taking part in an armed robbery and hit-and-run in Anaheim the previous day before attempting to evade police, according to an Anaheim Police Department news release.
A second man, who was killed during a standoff with police officers Friday, had not been identified.
Paul Brian Marval III, a 39-year-old Lake Elsinore resident, and the unidentified man were suspected of conducting an armed robbery at a Fry’s Electronics in the 3300 block of East La Palma Avenue (map) that was reported to authorities around 1:51 p.m.
A hit-and-run involving a tan pickup truck and dark SUV at the intersection of North Tustin Avenue and East Miraloma Avenue (map) was reported “a short time later,” the news release stated.
Witnesses saw two men run from the SUV after the crash, and Marval was detained without incident.
Detectives later learned the dark SUV, a 2012 black Honda Pilot, had been stolen in Corona.
The second man pointed a gun a bystanders as he ran to a car dealership in the 1300 block of North Tustin Avenue, witnesses reported.
The man took shelter in a dark BMW SUV in the dealership lot and police attempted to negotiate with him for over an hour.
“Without warning, the suspect began firing at the officers and there was an exchange of gunfire,” the news release stated.
During the gun battle the man was wounded and died.
Marvel was identified by witnesses as having been involved in the armed robbery.
He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, attempted burglary, probation violation, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Marvel was booked at the Anaheim Police Department Temporary Detention Facility and held on $100,000 bail.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office planned to take over the investigation.
