Two women were critically injured when a pickup truck crashed into a group of people celebrating the Fourth of July in Anaheim Sunday.
The incident was reported about 9:40 p.m. in the 200 block of North Grand Avenue, Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Jacob Gallacher said.
Arriving officers found two women suffering from “major injuries,” Gallacher said.
The unidentified women were said to be 22 and 44 years old. Both are from Anaheim but it was unclear if there was any relationship between the two victims.
The victims had been watching fireworks when the gray Chevy pickup truck crashed into the spectators.
The initial caller told police the driver was doing doughnuts in the street when the vehicle jumped the curb and went into the crowd, Gallacher said. "I don’t know if that’s something that’s been substantiated at this point," the sergeant added.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
The driver was detained at the scene and then released, Gallacher said. There was no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, he said.
Investigators are still reviewing video evidence to determine what led up to the crash and will later determine if prosecution is warranted, Gallacher said.
